In a race where many voters are critical of the King County Prosecuting Attorney鈥檚 Office as a 鈥渃atch-and-release鈥� stage in the local criminal justice system, Federal Way Mayor and former King County Senior Deputy Prosecutor wants a 鈥渞eset.鈥�

His race against , outgoing Prosecutor Dan Satterberg鈥檚 chief of staff, is one that will have to deal with a soaring rise in crime 鈥� including a 70% spike in shooting cases.

鈥淭he situation has reached crisis levels,鈥� Ferrell told Tuesday鈥檚 Dori Monson Show listeners. 鈥淜ing County is at a tipping point. A lot of people think we鈥檙e long past the tipping point. Not only is the King County jail down 100 officers from pre-COVID staffing, but police staffing countywide is critically low,” Ferrell said. It鈥檚 created a 鈥渓iteral catch-and-release that has to get addressed鈥� because the 鈥減eople of our community have really been victimized.鈥�

Part of his plan, if elected, is to tackle the 鈥渃rippling backlog of 4,500 felony cases鈥� facing the prosecutor’s office. 鈥淭hat has to be addressed on Day 1. I鈥檝e got an aggressive triage plan to get those cases through.鈥�

Whoever is elected will become 鈥渢he hinge-point to the entire criminal justice system,鈥� he explained.

Ferrell 鈥� who spent 16 years as a trial attorney in the King County Prosecuting Attorney鈥檚 Office before being elected for three terms as Federal Way mayor – also intends to make 鈥渟ure that the jails are fully staffed.鈥�

His hands-on trial experience, he told Dori, is a far better fit for the job than Manion鈥檚 administrative experience 鈥� which includes only one criminal trial during her career. While Manion鈥檚 work during Satterberg鈥檚 progressive tenure has been in budgeting and human relations, she was key in developing the county鈥檚 earliest youth diversion program, which prevented minors from facing misdemeanor criminal charges if they agreed to attend a four-hour workshop.

Ferrell cited his endorsements include police guilds of King County, Seattle, Bellevue, Kent, Federal Way, and Des Moines; mayors of 15 suburban cities; several labor unions; The Seattle Times editorial board; and long-time senior prosecutors in the office.

Dori asked Ferrell whether voters should take stock in the flap that has arisen between his opponent and trial attorneys in the prosecutor鈥檚 office.

It started with a comment made before a recent voters鈥� forum, when Manion discounted her lack of criminal trial experience, comparing herself to Amazon chief Jeff Bezos because he 鈥渄oesn鈥檛 put the labels on the boxes or drive the trucks.鈥�

The comparison created an uproar among some prosecutors, at least one of whom wrote that Manion鈥檚 comments undermined their work and did 鈥渟ignificant harm to our cause.鈥�

Ferrell called her comments 鈥渆litist鈥� for someone who has 鈥渘ever tried a criminal case, never handled one criminal trial or filed a case or ever had a caseload.

鈥淪he鈥檚 really out of touch,鈥� Ferrell added.
