With at least one nationally recognized polling group showing Republican newcomer Tiffany Smiley within less than three percentage points behind Democratic Sen. Patty Murray, Smiley repeated her intention to debate the five-term incumbent 鈥 pointing to rising inflation, drugs coming over the southern U.S. border, and what she predicts will be higher home energy costs this winter.
Her growing popularity, Smiley told Dori Monson Show listeners Thursday, is because she is not 鈥渆ntrenched in the Beltway鈥 where lawmakers don鈥檛 鈥渦nderstand what鈥檚 happening in real life.鈥
Smiley trails Murray 46.3 to 49.2 in a conducted between Aug. 30-Sept. 1 among 1,087 voters likely to cast a ballot in the November general election. The Pasco nurse told Dori her campaign鈥檚 internal polling shows the two candidates are 鈥渘eck and neck 鈥 with momentum on our side.”
鈥淚鈥檓 moving up in the polls because I鈥檓 fighting for Washington state,鈥 she added.

She believes she鈥檚 gaining traction among voters who are feeling the pain each time 鈥渇amilies are having to go to the grocery store.鈥 Across the country, the annual inflation rate was 8.3% for the last 12 months, ending August 2022, according to U.S. Labor Department data published Sept. 13.
Smiley pointed to what she refers to as the 鈥淚nflation Production Act 鈥 not an Inflation Reduction Act鈥 as one example, demonstrating how out of touch national lawmakers are regarding the impact of escalating prices.
The Washington native is also frustrated by Murray鈥檚 response to the border crisis.
鈥淧atty Murray is soft on crime. That is clear,鈥 Smiley said.
鈥淚 was just at the border a few weeks ago,鈥 she continued. She described seeing 鈥渟afe houses鈥 on the U.S. side where cartel-driven sex and drug trafficking was happening.
Instead of Murray taking action, Smiley said, Murray, is just a lap dog for President Biden.
鈥淚f the President tells her ‘don鈥檛 go to the border, don鈥檛 talk about the border,’ she鈥檚 not going to address it,鈥 Smiley said. 鈥淧atty Murray works for Washington, D.C.鈥
Drugs coming over the border into the U.S. 鈥渋sn鈥檛 a Democrat or Republican issue,鈥 Smiley argued. 鈥淭his is an American issue.鈥
Meanwhile, Smiley remains frustrated with local media 鈥 including The Seattle Times and Everett Herald 鈥 which she believes are changing the details for candidate interviews. At one point, she said, she and Murray were supposed to meet with editorial boards face-to-face and in-person 鈥 but arrangements changed 鈥渂ehind closed doors,鈥 Smiley claims. She blames 鈥渃orporate media,鈥 which she fears is going to 鈥済ive [Murray] a pass and insulate her.鈥
Smiley said she鈥檚 not afraid to endorse a two-term limit of 12 total years for U.S. senators 鈥 and is ready to publicly spar that and other topics during a debate.
鈥淭here are debates on the calendar I have committed to,鈥 Smiley said. 鈥淚 will be there. I am not sure Patty Murray will be there.鈥
