ROME (AP) 鈥� Pope Francis has defended聽聽to let priests bless same-sex couples but admitted that 鈥渟olitude is a price you have to pay鈥� when you make difficult decisions.

Francis doubled down and insisted that the 鈥淟ord blesses everyone,鈥� during a Sunday interview with an Italian talk show. But he acknowledged the聽聽his decision has sparked 鈥� Africa鈥檚 bishops have united in a continent-wide refusal to implement the Vatican declaration and individual bishops in Eastern Europe, Latin America and elsewhere have also voiced opposition.

Vatican鈥檚 Dec. 18 declaration restated traditional church teaching that marriage is a lifelong union between a man and woman. But it allowed priests to offer spontaneous, non-liturgical blessings to same-sex couples seeking God鈥檚 grace in their lives, provided such blessings aren鈥檛 confused with the rites and rituals of a wedding.

During an appearance on 鈥淐he Tempo Che Fa,鈥� Frances acknowledged, in his first comments since the uproar, the 鈥渞esistance鈥� the decision has generated. He blamed it on bishops not really understanding the issue and refusing to open a dialogue about it.

Asked if he felt alone, Francis replied: 鈥淵ou take a decision and solitude is a price you have to pay.鈥�

鈥淪ometimes decisions are not accepted,鈥� he said. 鈥淏ut in most cases, when you don鈥檛 accept a decision, it鈥檚 because you don鈥檛 understand.鈥�

The danger, he said, is that when people who don鈥檛 understand refuse to enter into a 鈥渂rotherly discussion鈥� and instead harden their hearts, resist and 鈥渕ake ugly conclusions.鈥�

鈥淭his has happened with these last decisions about blessing everyone,鈥� Francis said. 鈥淭he Lord blesses everyone.鈥�
