Top ten films of 2016

Here are my picks for last year’s best movies:
1. Sing Street 鈥 Yes, it鈥檚 a musical. But, I urge you to see it even if you can鈥檛 stand the genre. A young man from Dublin starts a band for the same reason so many others did the same- to impress a girl. The music his fledgling group creates both perfectly embodies the flash of 80鈥檚 pop but also reflects what it is to be a teenager trying to find out who he is. It鈥檚 a nearly flawless film.

2. Manchester By The Sea 鈥 Besides Ben Affleck (yes, really) and Alejandro Innaritu, I don鈥檛 believe there to be a more consistently outstanding director than Kenneth Lonergan. Affleck鈥檚 brother, Casey, owns the screen in this story about how we as humans process grief. Michelle Williams, in the film for mere minutes, delivers the most impactful few minutes of screen time this year.

3. Weiner 鈥 Anthony Weiner is a jerk. I knew that heading to viewing this documentary. This reaffirmed that notion but also reminded me how many people wanted to forgive him for his scandalous and disloyal behavior. But the moments, like the one featured below, when Huma Abedin finally starts coming to terms with who she鈥檚 married to are rare to find on film.

4. Don鈥檛 Think Twice 鈥 Mike Birbiglia is equally talented as a comedian and as a storyteller. This understated comedy looks into what happens to a group of friends when one of them achieves such a level of success that the relationship becomes toxic. A struggling comedy improv troupe loses one of its key members to an SNL style show and is forced to try and keep their dream alive.

5. Midnight Special 鈥 I really thought that Independence Day: Resurgence would be the best Sci-Fi movie of the year but that鈥檚 because I鈥檓 an idiot. Instead, Midnight Special delivered. A young boy with a special set of supernatural talents still needs his parents to keep him safe. Child actors are always a risk to ruin an otherwise good film, but Jaeden Lieberher is great as the young hero/victim.

6. Sausage Party 鈥 Animated foods find out what horrors lay ahead after customers pluck them off the shelves. THEY GET EATEN. This is a filthy as a script gets but also as funny. I can鈥檛 post a scene because there鈥檚 not one clean enough for MyNorthwest.com (even with a NSFW tag).
7. Voyage of Time: Life鈥檚 Journey 鈥 Pretentious is an adjective often used to describe the works of director Terrence Malick. It鈥檚 not inaccurate (I mean just look at the title). This documentary about the history of the universe (seriously) will seem like an eternity at 90 minutes for a lot of filmgoers. But, if you like Malick, you will absolutely eat it up. And I like Malick. There鈥檚 also a 40 minute IMAX version if you want to make less of a commitment.

8. The Lobster 鈥 The strangest thing I saw all year. I don鈥檛 even quite know what genre it belongs in. Here鈥檚 the premise: In a dystopian future (is there any other kind) those single adults who are unable to find a mate are sent to a facility for a last chance at achieving love. If they fail, they are robbed of their right to be a human and turned into an animal. That鈥檚 really the plot. Comedy? Drama? Thriller? Kind of all of them. It鈥檚 worth a look.

9. The Witch 鈥 Haunting. It鈥檚 a simple story but never for a second does the dread relent. A family of 17th century homesteaders find themselves dealing with the forces of pure evil. The acting is exemplary particularly for a horror film but the best member of the cast and the character that will provide the viewer chills well after movie is over is Black Phillip. A goat (but much more).

10. Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping 鈥 I put this on here because I didn鈥檛 think it got the attention it deserved. Andy Samberg and the other two members of Lonely Island are responsible for the best of the best SNL digital shorts. They proved they could be hysterically funny for 3 minutes at a time and with this their first full length feature they have also shown they can keep the jokes going for 90 minutes. It鈥檚 a spot on parody of a vapid popstar (obviously) and the rise and fall of his fame. Samberg is one of the most underrated comedic forces working on screen and television today. This is a great showcase of his talents.
