The case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia has become a telling example of how some Democrats’ reflexive opposition to former President Trump can lead them into politically damaging territory.
And the latest news about the illegal immigrant鈥檚 background is damning.
Fox News reports of a filed against Abrego Garcia.
In August 2020, Jennifer Vasquez Sura, the wife of Abrego Garcia, filed a protective order in Maryland alleging multiple instances of abuse, including kicking, slapping, shoving, mental injury to a child, and detaining her against her will. The protective order also listed their son and Abrego Garcia鈥檚 stepchildren as needing protection.
Vasquez Sura eventually requested the petition be rescinded, citing a desire to celebrate their son’s birthday together and noting that Abrego Garcia had agreed to continue counseling and if not, to sign divorce papers.
Suddenly Democrats are silent on Kilmer Abrego Garcia
Initially, Democratic lawmakers and activists rallied behind Garcia, portraying him as a victim of the Trump administration’s immigration policies. He was merely a 鈥淢aryland man.鈥 However, as more information about Garcia’s alleged criminal history surfaced, their fervor noticeably waned.
What happened to not leaving El Salvador until the suspected MS-13 gang member returned 鈥渉ome鈥 to Maryland? Over the weekend, the 24/7 obsession from Democrats suddenly disappeared. Democrats were busy with their embarrassing 鈥渟it-in鈥 at the Capitol that accomplished little more than a few mentions on the evening news.
Smartly, President Donald Trump brought the story back to the forefront via a forceful interview on ABC News where he pointed out the evidence tying Abrego Garcia to MS-13. And despite anchor Terry Moran dismissing the evidence, it鈥檚 plentiful. This is not a good guy. And it forces Democrats into defending him again.
Democrats ignore the evidence
Court documents and police records indicate that Abrego Garcia had a history of domestic violence, including allegations from his wife that he had physically abused her. Additionally, law enforcement sources identified Abrego Garcia as a member of the MS-13 gang, a claim supported by informants and gang unit investigations.
Radical Democrats like Squad grandmother Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Seattle simply pretend none of this evidence exists. She is still claiming that the entire case against him is 鈥渓ies鈥 to justify his 鈥渒idnapping and disappearing.鈥 Jayapl, like many in her party, do not believe in borders and offers no distinction between criminal illegal immigrants and those trying to better their lives and contribute to our communities.
But for wiser Democrats, these legal disclosures posed a dilemma for championing Abrego Garcia’s cause. Portraying him as some innocent victim clashed with evidence suggesting he was involved in violent criminal activity, and the public knows this. Polling shows significant support for Trump鈥檚 efforts on immigration, including mass deportation, especially of criminal illegal immigrants.
A strategy of attack
This pattern reflects a larger issue within the Democratic Party: a desire to oppose Trump on every front, often without fully vetting the individuals or causes they support. They just can鈥檛 help themselves, broken by the MAGA president.
In their eagerness to criticize Trump, some Democrats keep hurting their own cause, aligning themselves with the worst possible individuals that no reasonable person would call a victim. Meanwhile, actual victims of their policies, like Laken Riley, are almost entirely ignored or dismissed.
The onslaught of attacks on Trump may hurt him in the polls. But so what? Trump rarely stops pursuing his agenda based on polls. But even if he sustains damage鈥攁nd he clearly has鈥擠emocrats are destroying their own brand to the point that they won鈥檛 be able to recover.
