鈥楬e wanted to serve people鈥�: Pierce County honors late deputy with memorial fund

Dominique 鈥淒om鈥� Calata, a Pierce County Sheriff鈥檚 deputy, passed away Wednesday afternoon after a shootout while issuing a warrant in Spanaway.
He leaves behind a wife and young son. The Pierce County Sheriff鈥檚 Department has established a memorial fund in his honor.
鈥淎 legacy fund has been established in memory of Deputy Dom Calata. This is the official legacy fund and is created in partnership with Tacoma-Pierce County Crime Stoppers. 100% of all funds will go directly to Deputy Calata’s wife and young son,鈥� a Pierce County news release reads.

Troyer shared some details about Deputy Calata鈥檚 life. He was only 35 years old.
鈥淒om was one of our typical age deputies that are out there taking care of business,鈥� the sheriff continued. 鈥淗e spent six years in the military. He was in the reserves for seven years. He was his ASB president in high school, and was a guy that just always knew what he wanted to do.”
鈥淗e wanted to serve people. He wanted to serve his country, his community,” Troyer said. “Being on the department for six years, that’s relatively kind of short, and being able to make it as a front-man point guy in our SWAT team shows that you have a lot of experience. He also had a soft heart.鈥�
