An Olympia High School teacher posted an inflammatory message on his Instagram in which he declared, “This teacher kills fascists.” And he’s being defended by the Olympia School District.
Ryan Akiyama wrote on his Instagram last Wednesday that he would be flying a flag with the comment during the Leavenworth SkyRace over the weekend. He declared that he, “Might need to print it on a t-shirt next for all my fellow WOKE DEI educators still showing up with courage and care.”
“Yes, I’m woke. Yes, I teach DEI. No, I’m not sorry if that triggers the willfully ignorant,” he concluded.
Akiyama may, however, be sorry it triggered concern. After the post caught the attention of upset parents in the district, the teacher turned his account private over the weekend. As of Tuesday morning, the account had been taken completely offline.
Ryan Akiyama defended the comments
After some commenters challenged the post, and before the account as taken down, Akiyama defended his message.
The teacher said he was simply a “public educator taking a stand against fascism, in defense of American ideals as espoused in our Declaration of Independence and the Preamble to the Constitution.”聽To the people he says may be “feeling triggered,” Akiyama invited them “to a period of self reflection and honest reading.”
“Reading the wikipedia [sic] entries on vocabulary terms like ‘woke’ ‘equity’ ‘inclusion’ might help deprogram the propaganda you’ve fallen prey to. Public education is an inherently political act: not in service of any one creed (the direction the neo-fascists in the MAGA movement are driving) but in service of E PLURIBUS UNUM, All are created equal, and equal protection under the law. None of us teach so-called white guilt,” he wrote.
Olympia School District has the teacher’s back
In a statement to “The Jason Rantz Show” on KTTH, a district spokesperson defended Akiyama.
“The Olympia School District respects the constitutionally protected rights of its staff and students, including employees鈥 First Amendment right to free speech. As stated in District Policy 5254, the First Amendment protects employees’ right to express themselves freely, including on personal social media accounts,” the spokesperson explained.
The spokesperson said it tries to “balance the rights of employees with the district鈥檚 obligation to maintain an effective and respectful learning environment.” And if any student or parent have concerns, the spokesperson encourages them to speak to the school.
“As a general rule, the district does not regulate or monitor employees鈥 personal social media content. However, consistent with federal and state law, there are limited circumstances under which the district may intervene. Specifically, employee speech may be subject to regulation if it disrupts district operations or undermines the district鈥檚 ability to function effectively. These determinations are made on a case-by-case basis, in accordance with district policies and legal standards,” he said.
Ryan Akiyama has a history of questionable actions
Akiyama did not respond to multiple requests for comment from “The Jason Rantz Show” on KTTH. But he’s no聽stranger to controversy.
A former Yelm principal, Akiyama left his post after facing an arrest on suspicion of DUI and possessing a dangerous weapon (brass knuckles) in 2019. He pleaded guilty to reckless driving in Thurston County District Court, to . He was placed on probation and ordered to pay a fine, but did not serve jail time.
At the time, Akiyama was demoted from principal to teacher.
Silence from the Olympia School District
Clearly, Akiyama holds questionable judgment and his Instagram post suggests he’s unabashedly political in the classroom.
Akiyama openly fantasizing about 鈥渒illing fascists鈥 on social media, bragging about his woke credentials, and using inflammatory language that does nothing but divide students and staff, warrants his removal from the classroom. But instead of accountability, we get a defend from the Olympia School District. Where鈥檚 the outrage from leadership? Where are the consequences? If a teacher posted about 鈥渒illing liberals,鈥 they鈥檇 be put on administrative leave before the end of the day.
There鈥檚 nothing courageous about threatening violence or celebrating it鈥攅ven in a childish 鈥渁nti-fascist鈥 package. When an educator holds up their personal politics as a badge of honor and takes shots at parents and community members as 鈥渨illfully ignorant,鈥 it sends a chilling message to students who don鈥檛 toe the woke party line.
Remove Ryan Akiyama from the classroom
This is what happens when school districts are taken over by radical activists who care more about pushing ideology than protecting students. If Olympia鈥檚 leaders won鈥檛 act, it鈥檚 up to parents to demand better鈥攂ecause the kids deserve so much more than this.
You鈥檙e either with Akiyama or you鈥檙e the enemy. And if he labels you a fascist, it’s fair to question if you’re safe around him.
