Police raided a luxury apartment complex Wednesday in Seattle’s University District and recovered 28 dogs, many living in cages or corralled in small rooms.

Officers also rescued several cats, chinchillas, and even gerbils. They say all the animals were suffering from poor health and were covered in feces.

Felix lives next door and says he and his roommate have heard the dogs barking around the clock.

“We have been here for about one month and I think there have just been more and more dogs,” Felix said.

Seattle police were acting on a tip from building managers that the residents were running an illegal breeding operation when they started investigating a week ago. Just before noon on Wednesday, they served a search warrant and took the animals out for medical evaluation before turning them over to the Humane Society.

Detectives and prosecutors are still evaluating what charges they might bring before making any arrests.
