A vehicle potentially impersonating U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents prompted an investigation by the Fife Police Department (FPD) after it was caught circling the parking lot of a Ukrainian grocery store.
The vehicle, a black van, had the word “ICE” and a circular emblem similar to the one used by ICE across the side of the van. However, the vehicle didn’t have any license plates, provoking concern among law enforcement officials and those who witnessed the van circling the lot.
“The emblems appear to be erroneous due to distortions/misspellings within them,” FPD stated. “The vehicle slowly circled the parking lot and parked at an angle in front of the store, taking up two spaces. When a security guard approached, it left the parking spot and continued to circle the lot. It blocked the driveway momentarily, but when confronted by a security guard, it drove away.”
The Department of Homeland Security has confirmed that the vehicle in question is not one of their vehicles. The car was seen circling around Emish Market on March 16 at 5 p.m.
“They were acting very weird. Unfortunately, some customers and employees didn’t understand if they were real or not,” Olena Rae, the store’s manager, told . “We just don’t want our customers to be afraid of situations like that. We don’t want our employees to get scared.”
“This is an active investigation, and the Fife Police Department is currently working with the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI Seattle Field Office regarding this matter,” FPD stated.
