A towering giant sequoia tree in Seattle’s Green Lake neighborhood鈥攖hat could have survived for over a century鈥攎ay now be removed by the city.

The massive tree, believed by activists to be the largest sequoia on Seattle private property, is preventing the removal of a home behind it, according to

Located on North Woodlawn Avenue, the sequoia is one of 13 trees scheduled for removal. However, local activists are working tirelessly to delay its removal and transplant it to a nearby park.

Under SMC 25.11.070, the 鈥渂asic tree protection area鈥 restricts construction around big trees, often limiting development unless removal is necessary.

Seattle Parks and Recreation has confirmed that negotiations are still happening, but the property owner is adamant that saving the tree is impossible. The roots are encroaching on essential infrastructure, including sewer lines, and are currently damaging a bulkhead.

As an alternative, the owner is willing to fund a new sequoia in Green Lake if the city desires. Seattle鈥檚 2023 tree ordinance allows large trees to be cut if they make it impossible to build.
