Microsoft is laying off approximately 9,100 employees, the tech giant confirmed Wednesday.

It’s the largest round of job cuts since 2023, confirmed, equivalent to 4% of Microsoft’s workforce. The company had about 228,000 employees worldwide as of June 2024.

According to the , 3,120 employees in Redmond and Bellevue will be laid off by Aug. 1. The local layoffs were announced in waves, starting May 13 through July 2.

The Seattle-area-based employees will be laid off between mid-July and early August. Microsoft stated the cuts were not related to performance, but instead an effort to reduce layers of management as it continues to heavily invest in artificial intelligence (AI).

Last month, Bloomberg News reported that thousands of jobs would be cut this summer following the end of Microsoft鈥檚 fiscal year.

In May, Microsoft reduced its global workforce by approximately 3%, resulting in a total of around 6,000 employees, including 1,985 workers in Washington, as seen through . This was the largest round of layoffs for the company since 2023, when 10,000 employees were let go.
