Northwest weather, heat wave...

Temperatures around the Northwest are expected to steadily increase toward record or near-record numbers this weekend. But that might not last too long.

The National Weather Service reports that temperatures will reach the upper 80s around much of Western Washington on Thursday. By Friday and Saturday, temps should crack 90 and could be in the mid-90s.

Things are expected to start cooling down on Sunday, NWS Meteorologist Ted Buehner says. The cooling trend will likely continue as temperatures drop into the mid-70s early next week.

Does that mean this weekend could be the last hurrah for our summer weather? Buehner says not necessarily.

Western Washington could once against warm up during the end of next week.

“So summer’s not over yet,” Buehner said.

By the time we get into the latter part of this month and into September, Buehner says Western Washington residents can expect “a lot” of days in the 70s and lower 80s.

For now, however, an Excessive Heat Watch is in effect for much of the Northwest. It remains in effect for interior lowlands from Thursday afternoon through Saturday evening.

The Heat Watch is why there is now a burn ban in effect for the entire state through Sept. 30. The Washington State Department of Natural Resources says the increased heat and forecast wind make the next few weeks the most dangerous for fire this year.
