Rep. Dave Reichert (R-WA 8th District) may challenge Governor Jay Inslee in a run for governor next year.
that it has confirmed the possible run with multiple sources in the Republican party.
“This time is the most serious I’ve ever seen him,” Mike Shields, the congressman’s former chief of staff, told Roll Call.
Republicans have not won a gubernatorial race in Washington state since 1980.
The former King County sheriff told ³ÉÈËXÕ¾ Radio’s Jason Rantz Show last September that he wouldn’t rule out a run and that he’s a believer in keeping his options open.
“That’s what I’ve done my entire career, even in the sheriff’s office,” he said.
“Your career leads you places people recognize that you might be good in this position or that position. We’re always open to any options that opportunity might present itself.”
Reichert’s name was expected to appear on the ballot in November, challenging Democrat who won 32 percent of the vote in the August primaries.
But even last year, Reichert said the Republican Party had been approaching him about a future as governor.
“I think it’s an option that I’d consider,” he said.
