Seattle Democrat promotes NRA gun safety program

Feb 21, 2013, 1:26 PM | Updated: 1:58 pm

A Seattle lawmaker is pushing a gun safety program for children developed by the National Rifle Association.

The NRA has little love for State Senator Maralyn Chase, but she likes the Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program that features the motto: “Stop. Don’t touch. Leave the area. Tell an adult.”

Chase, a 32nd district Democrat, is sponsoring a bill that would require the state Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction to develop a gun safety program based on Eddie Eagle that schools could adopt by the fall of 2014.

The measure gets a hearing in the Senate Early Learning and K-12 Education Committee Thursday evening in Olympia.

A separate resolution in the state Senate would urge all schools, day cares, preschools and child care programs to teach firearms safety.
