Seattle driver claims seizures led to fatal crash

Oct 28, 2013, 1:08 PM | Updated: 2:13 pm

A Seattle man who claims he suffers from recurring seizures will spend four years in prison for a fiery, high speed car crash that killed two people.

In King County Superior Court Monday, Daniel Habeeb, 45, entered an Alford Plea to one count of vehicular homicide and one count of vehicular assault. The pleas mean Habeeb did not concede guilt, but acknowledged that the prosecutor had enough evidence to convict him.

Habeeb also pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to a second count of vehicular homicide. Habeeb told the judge he suffered from temporal lobe epilepsy which can cause seizures.

The rear-end crash on Lake City Way in November 2011 killed another driver, Kristopher Martin, 33 and Martin’s passenger, Laura Sheard, 26. Habeeb had two girls in his S.U.V.

Investigators estimated Habeeb was traveling 70-to-90 miles per hour at the time of the rear end crash.

Habeeb was convicted in another fatal car crash in January 2009.
