The (UTC) is changing the 206 area code as it works to ensure the availability of future telephone numbers in western Washington.
Beginning June 10, 2025, new phone numbers in the 206 area code region may be assigned the 564 area code as part of an ongoing overlay project.
The change will not affect existing phone numbers or rates. Despite this, all callers will still be required to dial 10 digits.
Why does Seattle need a new area code?
The 564 area code was first introduced in 2017 to address a dwindling supply of phone numbers. Initially, it served as a relief to the 360 area code. Under the oversight of the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA), the area code is now being expanded to the 206 area code.
