Tacoma temporarily halts police chief search amid management shift

The City of Tacoma placed a pause in its search for a permanent police chief.
City Manager Elizabeth Pauli delivered a regarding the city’s reasoning behind the delay and appreciation for current leadership.
“This decision is in service to ensuring the long-term success and alignment of city leadership. The city is fortunate to have strong, capable interim leadership currently in place, with Chief Patti Jackson,” Pauli wrote.
The next steps for the Tacoma Police Chief hiring process
Interim City Manager Hyun Kim will begin duties on June 30, and the process for finding a new police chief is aligned with Kim’s leadership.
“This pause in recruitment aligns decision-making for a permanent police chief with the transition at the city manager level of the organization, and with consideration of other organizational transitions,” the statement said.
Pauli ensured the City of Tacoma has addressed the importance of finding the correct fit for the position.
“It is prudent to empower the city鈥檚 new leadership to play an integral role in confirming the appointment of a permanent police chief,” Pauli said. “This approach will help ensure the chosen leader fully aligns with the evolving vision and future priorities of our city government.”
