Man arrested for allegedly trying to murder Lummi Nation officer during traffic stop

A suspect was arrested in connection with the shooting of a Lummi Nation police officer.
A 26-year-old man was arrested in Ferndale around 12 hours after allegedly attempting to murder the officer, Whatcom County Sheriff Donnell Tanksley confirmed during a press conference Monday. The man has a criminal history of drug possession.

A Lummi Nation police officer was shot during a traffic stop for a car that drove into a ditch at 12:52 a.m. Monday, the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) .
The 37-year-old police officer made initial contact with the suspect in the 3200 block of North Red River Road after the driver went off the road and into a ditch.
When the officer approached the vehicle, the suspect opened fire and shot the officer multiple times. WCSO noted that the suspect fled the scene on foot.
Multiple agencies have responded to the scene, and the investigation remains ongoing.
鈥淭oday, we faced a horrific incident that has deeply affected our community,鈥 Tanksley stated via a Facebook post. 鈥淎 brave Lummi Nation Police Officer was shot while performing their duty to protect and serve. The officer received immediate medical attention, and we hope for their full recovery.”
The officer was transported to emergency medical care immediately after the shooting and has since undergone surgery for the wounds sustained.
鈥淚 want to emphasize our unwavering support for the officer and their family during this difficult time,” Tanksley stated. “We are working diligently to investigate this incident to help ensure that justice is served.”
The investigation is being conducted by the Law Enforcement Mutual Aid Response Team.
