Storm Tracker: Winter weather live updates

The snow is falling again all over Western Washington and it’s not supposed to start warming up again until early Friday morning. One to 2 inches of new snow is expected in Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia, Bellevue overnight.

SR 18 is closed from I-5 to SR 167 & from SR 164 to I-90 due to multiple downed trees, freezing rain and deteriorating conditions. Weyerhaeuser Way will remain open to allow for local traffic. The ramp from northbound I-5 to eastbound SR 18 is also closed.

I-90 Snoqualmie Pass – is open.

SR 202 between Fall City and Snoqualmie is closed indefinetly due to downed trees and unsafe conditions.

SR 900 at May Valley Road is closed due to downed trees.

SR 410 is closed between SR 164 and the Federated Forest.

Northbound SR 161 near Eatonville cutoff blocked due to blocked trees.

Westbound SR 162 is blocked at McMillan.

SR 121 (Maytown Road) is closed between Beaver Creek, and Kimmie Road SW due to multiple trees and downed power lines across the roadway.

SR 7 is closed from Alder Cutoff Road to Ohop Valley Road due to multiple trees and powerlines blocking the roadway.

SR 167 toll equipment for the HOT Lanes is experiencing outages. When drivers see a blank electronic sign at HOT lane access point, the lane is HOV only and closed to solo drivers.

4:13 p.m. Crews are out restoring power, but weather is slowing down the process. Don recommends brightening the day of workers in your neighborhood by bringing them a cup of hot chocolate if you see them out working!

3:42 p.m. Boeing says it’s operating on normal schedules across the Puget Sound region, except the Frederickson site “where second and third-shift operations have been suspended due to a loose power line and pole leaning at the main employee entrance to the site.”

3:35 p.m. From Tacoma Public Utility: “It’s ugly out there and getting uglier. Right now we have about 7,500 customers without power in these areas: around Franklin Pierce High School, around Curtis High School, in University Place near UP Primary, and Bridgeport Way and Cirque Drive- posted at about 2:40pm.

2:52 p.m. The power is out for thousands across the Puget Sound, 200,000 PSE customers, nearly 12,000 PUD customers. The Seattle Fire Department warns of the dangers of using candles. There have been two apartment fires this week.

2:43 p.m. Amtrak says it’s suspending service between Portland and Seattle because of bad weather, according to AP.

2:40 p.m. City of Seattle is urging residents to get home before dark. “We’re concerned about icy conditions being worse after sunset.”

2:20 p.m. UPDATE! The National Weather Service has released new information about the storm. Snow and ice rain into the evening and then things begin to warm up late tonight/early Friday morning. That’s when the rain returns.

1:10 p.m. Washington State Patrol Trooper Guy Gill reports that in the last 24 hrs, troopers statewide responded to 2317 incidents, including collisions, traffic control, stranded motorists and debris. Last year in the same 24 hour period they responded to 626 incidents. That’s an increase about 4x normal activity.

12:37 p.m. Northwest Hospital reports a large number of sledding injuries coming into the ER. Most cases are adults that have run into cars, poles and trees.

12:26 a.m. National Weather Service meteorologist Brad Coleman called in to give 97.3 成人X站 FM’s Dori Monson Show an update on the forecast.

Coleman says the continues until 2 p.m. and forecasters expect most of the snow and ice accumulation to stick around.

“We still have the cold air in place so we’re calling for temperatures remain steady,” says Coleman. “Everything you see out there is going to pretty much sit.”

While Coleman says warmer temperatures (in the 40s) and rain is expected tomorrow morning. He said this may not be our last shot of winter weather with cold air appearing in the forecast 7 to 10 days from now.

12:18 a.m. WSDOT says I-90 WB closure at Cle Elum will last several hours, 7 semis involved some with hazmat materials.

12:15 a.m. Governor Chris Gregoire spoke to KING 5 about why she declared a state of emergency.

“What it’s allowed us is to do is get prepared,” said Gregoire. “Things are changing by the moment and not necessarily for the better.”

Gregoire said the proclamation puts all Washington state workers on alert and gets the National Guard ready to activate if necessary.

11:52 a.m. 97.3 成人X站 FM reporter Brandi Kruse reports Seattle City Light has 6,700 customers without power. If you have to report an outage to Seattle City Light call 206-684-3000.

11:42 a.m. Andy Wappler tells 97.3 成人X站 FM’s Ross and Burbank Show that PSE currently has 180,000 customers without power.

Wappler says he has never seen an Ice Storm Warning posted before.

“It is truly a historic event,” says Wappler. “We simply have never had something like this.”

He says there may be people that will be without power for three to four days.

Gov. Chris Gregoire today issued a proclamation that ensures the delivery of valuable dairy products across Washington state. The proclamation would also 芒鈧 if needed 芒鈧 allow the activation of the Washington National Guard, and free up state agencies to take extraordinary steps to help local jurisdictions during the current winter storm.

芒鈧揟his is purely a precautionary measure,芒鈧 Gregoire said. 芒鈧揝o far, we haven芒鈧劉t received any requests for state assistance 芒鈧 but we know weather conditions are rapidly changing. I want to make sure we have every resource available to ensure our communities are safe. This proclamation would allow us to activate the National Guard if we need to. It also allows state agencies to respond quickly to any storm-related requests from cities and counties for state assistance. A brief waiver of the restrictions on dairy truck drivers芒鈧劉 work hours is needed now to avoid shipment delays that could mean the loss of nearly $1 million a day for the state芒鈧劉s dairy industry.芒鈧

Puget Sound Energy reports there are currently 70,000 customers without power in Thurston, Pierce and King County.

A Tacoma Power spokeswoman says a tree across transmission lines cut power to more than 24,000 customers Wednesday evening. They were able to restore power to all but 3,000 customers within three hours.

Seattle City Light reports 6,300 customers near Shoreline lost power Wednesday night. Power was restored to these customers by 10 p.m.

6:31 a.m. Two overturned trucks are keeping state troopers and WSDOT crews busy this morning; a tanker truck near Lacey and a truck full of fruit in Lynnwood. Check the traffic cams and flow map before you leave the house.

6:26 a.m. The white, fluffy snow has stopped falling in most areas, but now the National Weather Service is warning of an ice storm. KING-5 meteorologist Rich Marriott says he hasn’t seen an ice storm here in years.

6:10 a.m. Perry Cooper at Sea-Tac tells KING-5 they’re hoping to re-open a runway before 6:30, but they still must clear ice from ramps so that planes can safely taxi from the gates. Crews are also de-icing planes. Sea-Tac hasn’t shut all its runways in at least the last 10 years.
