Woodland Park Zoo gets set to create new homes for tigers, sloth bears

A new exhibit at Seattle’s Woodland Park Zoo will make
for a better vantage to see endangered tigers and sloth
bears as well as create space for immersive play for
visiting kids.

The 2-acre exhibits will evoke the feelings of the
animals’ natural habitats, including functions that allow
the tigers to stalk their “prey.”

Currently, the tigers, or tiger since one was euthanized
last month, are a little difficult to see, especially when
they’re sleeping underneath the exhibit’s ledge.

“They lay around and sleep a lot, that’s what cats do,”
said Pat Owen, who supervises the zoo’s animal keepers.
“Especially large cats.”

Woodland Park says that it’s their most ambitious
project since 1996 when they built The Trail of Vines.

Construction will begin this fall, and they’re
expecting to complete the projects in 2013 and 2014.

Here are artist renderings of what the new exhibits
will look like:
