MYNORTHWEST OPINION

Would you fall through the floor or hop in the Cash Cab?

When it comes to holiday programming on TV, the week
between Christmas and New Years is a total void. It’s
because we should be spending time with our family,
writing our New Year’s resolutions, and lighting the last
Hanukkah candle.

So channels like NBC trot out their cheapest-to-make
television shows: The game shows. With the exception of
the host, the people on air only get paid (with the
exception of their 15 minutes of fame) if they win.

This holiday season, NBC asked the question ‘Who’s Still
Standing?’ with trivia questions. If you don’t know
the answer and you run out of time, you fall through the
floor. It’s another ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire’ or
‘Deal or No Deal.’ But this one happens to have a new gimmick.

And that gimmick just happens to be watching people fall
through the floor in slow motion.

Take these silly game shows or leave them, this one does
remind of me of the most entertaining game show on
television. ‘Who’s Still Standing’s’ host is also the host of ‘Cash Cab,’ the taxi cab that picks up unknowing
contestants trying to get a ride in New York and then asks them trivia questions on the way to their destinations.

Call me old fashioned, but I’ll take a surprise taxi cab
gimmick over watching people, quite literally fall, to
their doom, any day.
