It would hit Seattleites with $1.3 billion in property taxes over the next six years, double the previous ask.

Harrell’s proposal includes what he describes as transformative new investments to expand access to affordable childcare and early learning through the nationally recognized Seattle Preschool Program. It also makes mental health resources available in K-12 schools, while offering free tuition at Seattle colleges and job training to support career paths.

During a recent segment on “The Gee and Ursula Show” on Xվ Newsradio, Co-host Gee Scott voiced his support of the initiative. But Ursula Reutin expressed concern over the hefty price tag.

Harrell’s education plan backed by some, questioned over cost

“It’s important, we all know, how much the city has put its role into education, primarily in education, and subsidized preschool programs and programs that provide tuition assistance for those going right from high school into maybe Community College,” Gee said.

Though Co-host Ursula Reutin agrees that education is important, she concerned with where the money is coming from.

“So, I don’t doubt the importance of the programs that are being served by this,” Ursula said. “My issue is just the number. We talk about it every single day. Taxes are going up.”

‘Your boy don’t want a nude beach’: Denny Blaine Park plagued by flashers /gee-and-ursula/denny-blaine-park-flashers/4080183 Sun, 27 Apr 2025 12:03:36 +0000 /?p=4080183 Denny Blaine Park has long been favored among sunbathers and swimmers. Now, it has become a great source of controversy. It developed into a Seattle “nude beach,” and the park is now at the center of a legal battle over how the city manages public places.

A lawsuit has been filed by neighbors, claiming that officials refuse to address increasing concerns, including public masturbation, sex acts, and other indecent exposure. The spokesperson for these anonymous plaintiffs told “The Gee and Ursula Show” on Xվ Newsradio that there have been numerous documented incidents over the last few years.

“When it comes to public urination, masturbation, sex in public, explicit drug use, or people just acting crazy, we’re the ones to step in and do something,” spokesperson Lee Keller explained.

Controversy erupts over Seattle’s only nude beach as legal battle escalates

Gee sympathized with Keller, agreeing that having people engage in such behavior near his house would make him uncomfortable, too.

“Me personally, your boy, don’t want a nude beach next to where I live,” Gee said. “I said it. I’m sorry. I just don’t want that.”

Gee and Ursula: Until stricter gun laws are implemented, ‘don’t expect anything to change’ /kiro-opinion/stricter-gun-laws/4078769 Tue, 22 Apr 2025 18:49:40 +0000 /?p=4078769 Students at Seattle’s Garfield High School are once again mourning the shooting death of a classmate. During a recent segment on “The Gee and Ursula Show” on Xվ Newsradio, co-host Ursula Reutin emphasized the need for stricter gun laws.

“Until we get serious about addressing gun violence, don’t expect anything to change anytime soon,” Ursula said.

On Monday, a vigil was held to celebrate and mourn the life of 18-year-old Garfield High School senior Salvador “Junior” Granillo.

Granillo was allegedly shot and killed while attending a party in Yakima in the 1500 block of South Keys Road. Detectives with the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office were informed about a gunshot victim at MultiCare Yakima Memorial Hospital at approximately 2 a.m. Sunday. Granillo died at the hospital.

Gun violence persists amid teen shootings

“My takeaways: don’t go to house parties if you’re a teen, because there’s a good chance there are other teens who are armed,” Ursula said. “And if you are at one of those parties, don’t get into an argument, because there’s a good chance someone’s going to pull a gun as a way to resolve that argument.”

Gee Scott, co-host of “Gee and Ursula,” pointed out that, under the current laws in King County, juveniles would need to be convicted of using a gun more than five times before they can be sentenced to more than 30 days in a detention facility.

“In King County, we still have on the books right now that if you’re a juvenile and you’re convicted for gun possession, you have up to five times before a conviction,” Gee said.

‘I don’t know that you have a right to privacy’: Seattle cops at Jan. 6 riot try to hide identities /gee-and-ursula/cops-who-attended-capitol/4078742 Tue, 22 Apr 2025 17:15:24 +0000 /?p=4078742 Current and former Seattle police officers who attended former President Donald Trump’s “Stop the Steal” rally on January 6, 2021, are asking the U.S. Supreme Court to keep their identities confidential in public court records.

Even though Ursula Reutin, co-host of “The Gee and Ursula Show,” is suspicious about the officer’s motivation in attending the rally, she understands why they wouldn’t want their names published.

“I understand their point, what is it going to do to release their names? Other than to potentially have people say, ‘these officers are terrible because they attended this rally,'” Ursula said.

Seattle cops seek to hide names after attending Jan. 6 rally

Four officers who were in Washington, D.C., on the day of the Capitol insurrection argued that they are protected by Washington state’s public records law. They maintained they did nothing wrong and claimed that disclosing their names would violate their right to privacy.

Xվ Newsradio contributor Angela Poe Russell pushed back, claiming that if you choose to attend a public event, you can have public photos taken and your identity can be easily revealed.

“If you attend a public event where anyone, any reasonable person in the area, can see you, I just don’t know that legally you have a right to privacy,” Poe Russell said.

Cleaning up Seattle: Ex-graffiti artist uses his knowledge to fight tagging /kiro-opinion/seattle-graffiti-tagging/4077483 Sun, 20 Apr 2025 12:01:52 +0000 /?p=4077483 A notorious graffiti tagger in Seattle, known for spray-painting the word “eager” thousands of times on both public and private property in Seattle, is making amends for his past transgressions by becoming part of the solution—cleaning up graffiti.

Prosecutors estimated that Casey Cain, the man behind the “eager” graffiti tags, has caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage. He was ordered to spend 80 hours cleaning graffiti as part of a 2024 plea agreement for a felony malicious mischief.

“Now he’s still cleaning (graffiti) up,” Ursula Reutin, co-host of “The Gee and Ursula Show,” said. “He did that, but he’s still cleaning up, and he’s actually getting paid for it. So Casey and another former tagger, Jay Volkman, now have a graffiti removal business called .”

Cain stated his graffiti removal business will be very effective in combating tagging because they “know how it works” better than most. Cain does want to work with the City of Seattle to establish a designated outlet for graffiti tagging.

How Gee, Ursula feel about the tagger-turned-cleaner’s business

“I have mixed feelings,” Ursula said. “First of all, I mean the part about them actually turning it into a business, I’m all good, as long as they’re not encouraging people to put more graffiti up because they know that group, and then getting paid to clean it up.”

Cain still faces charges from his prior cases, but he claimed his days of tagging are over, wanting to leave a better mark on Seattle instead.

“If you were to tell me that the new commissioner or the new czar for graffiti in the City of Seattle would be some former taggers, I’d be all for it,” Gee Scott, co-host of “The Gee and Ursula Show,” said.

Eggslut cracks open in Seattle’s Capitol Hill—Is the name too much or just some scrambled fun? /kiro-opinion/eggslut-seattle-capitol-hill/4077515 Fri, 18 Apr 2025 22:00:05 +0000 /?p=4077515 , an international breakfast restaurant chain with locations stretching as far as London and Tokyo, has found a new home—Seattle.

Its newest location will be at 1531 Melrose Avenue in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood, replacing Homegrown Sandwiches.

Egglsut is known for its assortment of egg-themed breakfast sandwiches, served on a toasted brioche bun, and sides including truffle hashbrowns.

Is Eggslut’s name too much for you?

“I know it sounds ridiculous, but I feel like I would need a shower after I go eat at Eggslut,” Ursula Reutin, co-host of “The Gee and Ursula Show” on Xվ Newsradio, said. “I feel horrible even saying it. I just don’t get into businesses that try to have these trendy names and a name that, in my opinion, denigrates women…and you know that I do have a foul mouth.”

“Even though the menu sounds great, everything sounds great, I’m telling you that it’s great, you would still not go somewhere based on a name?” Gee Scott, co-host of “The Gee and Ursula Show” on Xվ Newsradio, asked in response.

“OK family, hey boys, do you want to go to the Eggslut? No, I really don’t,” Ursula said.

Ursula also shared that she wouldn’t eat at other controversially-named places, like Pike Place Market’s Biscuit B**** or Las Vegas’ Heart Attack Grill.

According to Egglsut, the restaurant’s controversial name refers to the popular phrase, which started among foodies in the mid-2000s, that describes people who serve every dish topped by an egg.

“The question is, does the name matter? To some people, it does. I’m one of them,” Ursula said.

“When your sons come back in town after they’ve been out of town, what burger establishment is their favorite?” Gee asked Ursula.

“You want me to say Dick’s, but Dick’s is a person’s name, shorthand for Richard. So nice try, Gee,” Ursula responded. “That is a name. That is a nickname for Richard.”

“They didn’t call it Richard’s,” Gee said.

Gee and Ursula back speed cap device for repeat offenders—potential tool for teen drivers? /kiro-opinion/gee-and-ursula-speed-cap/4076792 Thu, 17 Apr 2025 12:00:26 +0000 /?p=4076792 The Washington Senate passed a bill that would require drivers with suspended licenses for reckless driving or speeding to install an “intelligent speed assistant” device in their vehicles, . The gadget would prevent drivers from exceeding the posted speed limit unless they hit a red button, which would allow them to override the system up to three times a month.

Gee Scott and Ursula Reutin, co-hosts of “The Gee and Ursula Show” on Xվ Newsradio, agreed with the idea, but not about the red button.

“Get rid of the red button,” Gee said. “I don’t even want it to be an option.”

Lawmakers said the red button would allow drivers to speed up if someone is dangerously tailgating, helping them avoid a potentially unsafe situation.

Gee and Ursula want to get rid of red button

However, Gee wasn’t buying that part.

“I love this idea of giving someone an opportunity to get back on the road. I did not like the whole red button and that lady’s explanation on the—well, if somebody’s riding it coming from behind, speeding. You need to speed more to get out now,” he said.

Ursula agreed with Gee’s point on the red button and also liked the idea of the device.

“In terms of going this route, I love this idea,” she said. “I see why it has a lot of bipartisan support. I see why even the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs supports this, because the reality is, people drive like nuts out there.”

Teen drivers next?

Gee also pointed out that more than repeat offenders could benefit from an “intelligent speed assistant.”

“You want to know who would love this more than anybody in the world? Parents who have that 16-year-old that just got their license, and you found out how much that insurance premium is,” he said.

‘Look at the facts’: Gee and Ursula don’t think Washington has an extra $20M for World Cup /kiro-opinion/world-cup-seattle/4075807 Tue, 15 Apr 2025 12:01:22 +0000 /?p=4075807

Seattle is set to host the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup at Lumen Field. However, organizers need $20 million to host the events—$19.6 million for Lumen Field, $2 million for the University of Washington (UW), and $100,000 for Gonzaga.

“If we provide anything, it would, I think, have to be much less than those figures that you just mentioned because let’s look at the facts,” Ursula Reutin, co-host of “The Gee and Ursula Show” on Xվ Newsradio, said. “The governor has asked every agency to cut back by 6%. We’re talking about a wealth tax, we’re talking about increasing property tax levies, et cetera, et cetera.

Seattle looks extra funding to host World Cup

The Senate and House have already agreed on funding for the UW and Gonzaga, leaving $19.6 million for Lumen Field.

Ursula argued against the state’s contribution due to a $15 billion budget deficit and economic challenges, including a 6% agency cut and potential recession.

Gee Scott, co-host of “Gee and Ursula,” agreed with Ursula and explained that tourism might not be a reliable source of income for Seattle this summer.

“I’m with you in saying no,” Gee said. “Visitors from Europe are down 13% right now; visitors from up north in Canada are down. So, will that have an impact on the World Cup here? I think so.”

‘Why does he still have a job?’: Gee and Ursula react to bodycam footage of Mercer Island cop /kiro-opinion/mercer-island-officer-bodycam/4075757 Mon, 14 Apr 2025 22:30:11 +0000 /?p=4075757 Todd Roggenkamp, a police officer for the  (MIPD), was demoted from sergeant to officer in early 2024 after displaying concerning behavior the year before. Now, due to recently , his demotion is becoming clearer.

The situation stemmed from Roggenkamp, his wife, and a subordinate officer returning to a bar to retrieve a cell phone the wife forgot. He allegedly flashed his badge at the bar to gain special access to the closed bar, but when he was denied entry, he tried to challenge a bar patron and a bartender to a fight. His wife slapped the bar patron and kicked him in the groin.

Once they left, they were pulled over by police. In now-released body cam footage, Roggenkamp is seen arguing with deputies about the validity of the traffic stop and lying about his position, claiming he was a firefighter instead. He then admitted he was drunk after mixing up his words. According to MIPD, he drove his vehicle within an hour of being described as “very intoxicated” by deputies after his wife was arrested for assault. He drove to King County Jail and demanded for his wife to be released before jail staff contacted MIPD.

Should Roggenkamp still be employed by MIPD?

“My question is, why does he still have a job?” Ursula Reutin, co-host of “The Gee and Ursula Show,” asked.

“Because he’s law enforcement, because police unions, because there are so many things that are put in place to protect awful cops,” Gee Scott, co-host of “The Gee and Ursula Show,” answered. “Am I surprised that this cop has a job still? No.”

Instead of a termination, Roggenkamp was granted a last-chance agreement that was entered in January 2024. The Criminal Justice Training Commission is still investigating this incident.

“Do you guys know what life was like before body cams? Do you know what some of these cops would do?” Gee asked. “I didn’t mean to get into a bad place with this topic, Ursula, but just think of the bad cops that have gotten away with stuff since slave patrol—the origins of police agencies. Imagine the families that have been messed up for generations because of that. It is just bothersome.”

Political scientist detests Trump’s tariff strategy: ‘This is insider trading masquerading as policy’ /gee-and-ursula/trump-tariff-strategy-2/4074759 Sun, 13 Apr 2025 12:00:33 +0000 /?p=4074759 revealed how President Donald Trump’s tariff strategy opened up many new opportunities to renegotiate with foreign countries over trade deals and that the U.S. is now “getting the respect we deserve now.”

Many pundits and experts disagreed with Lutnick’s claims, including political scientist Dr. Jason Johnson, an associate professor of politics and journalism at Morgan State.

“This is terrible. This is insider trading masquerading as global economic policy from this regime because I barely want to call them an administration,” Johnson said on “The Gee and Ursula Show” on Xվ Newsradio. “If you want to go to war, you pick a target, and then you go after that target, and you engage, and you battle, and you find the best deal, and you sue for peace. What you don’t do is start a war with everybody in the building, then backtrack on half the tariffs.

“This is not a good strategy. It will not accomplish the things that Trump said it would accomplish,” Johnson continued. “It doesn’t get us better deals long term, it doesn’t bring jobs back to the U.S., and in the short term, it could be very, very expensive, especially when it comes to the services, products and things like that that Americans want to buy in the summer.”

Finding positives among Trump’s plans

Johnson did identify some silver linings in the Trump administration’s aggressive strategy.

“I can say, in the long-term economic view, what Trump is doing right now is terrible, but many of these trade agreements did need to be readjusted. They just don’t need to be readjusted this way,” Johnson said. “What Trump is doing now could potentially get some of these deals to be renegotiated. Will they offset the bad deals? No. But the only positive I can see is that some of these trade relations were based on policies from 15, 20, sometimes 30 years ago. They needed to be updated and they haven’t been updated.

“The problem is, Trump isn’t doing it because he really wanted to update these deals long term,” Johnson added. “He’s doing it because he wanted to crash the stock market so his billionaire buddies could buy back stock and make money at our expense.”

‘Gee and Ursula’: Should homeowner be held liable for house party mass shooting? /kiro-opinion/mass-shooting-gee-ursula/4070747 Wed, 02 Apr 2025 17:45:37 +0000 /?p=4070747 A mass shooting broke out at a house party in Pierce County over the weekend. Six people were shot, including a 15-year-old and a 19-year-old, who both died. The four others are in serious condition but expected to survive.

According to, the mother of the 17-year-old girl who hosted the party was home at the time of the deadly shooting. “Gee and Ursula” on Xվ Newsradio wonder if the mom holds any responsibility for what happened at her home.

“We don’t have enough details, but I believe that if something happens within your property and you have given the okay to have that event… don’t be surprised if you are liable in some way, whether it’s criminal or civil,” Ursula Reutin explained.

Gee Scott said he needs more details before he can pass judgment on the mother, but warned that “you better be careful what you allow to happen in your home, because you could be held liable.”

‘Gee and Ursula’ call out ‘ironic’ school board complaint over trans athletes /kiro-opinion/wa-transgender-athletes/4070628 Wed, 02 Apr 2025 12:30:43 +0000 /?p=4070628 The Kennewick School Board is asking the Trump administration to enforce its executive order ban on transgender girls from sports competitions. School board members say they need federal intervention because the district is stuck in a difficult spot as state law conflicts with the Trump administration’s order.

“It’s ironic that they are reaching out to the Department of Education,” said Ursula Reutin of the “Gee and Ursula Show” on Xվ Newsradio. She added, “The whole reason for getting rid of the Department is to give control to the state. So now, what is it that they’re arguing for?”

Co-host Gee Scott also noted the irony: supporters of Trump’s policy are focused on following federal law, but will seemingly overlook state law.

“Those executive orders don’t supersede the law in the state,” Gee said. “I find it also funny that the same people who say, ‘get rid of the Department of Education,’ are trying to go to the federal folks so they can get help.”

‘Trans people have existed since the beginning of time’

Ursula noted that given the amount of “time and energy” the Trump administration is putting into the order, one might think that transgender athletes would be “one of the biggest issues facing our country today.” However, according to research conducted by , only about 1.6 million individuals, or 0.6% of the population 13 and older, identify as transgender in the United States.

“I just implore people to actually look at the history of the trans community,” said Ursula. “It’s only recently that they have felt somewhat safer to be more out in the open. But these trans people have existed since the beginning of time.”

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association will be voting on two proposals related to trans athletes competing.

‘Where’s the help?’: ‘Gee and Ursula’ call out Trump admin. healthcare cuts to Washington /kiro-opinion/healthcare-funding-cuts-wa/4068565 Fri, 28 Mar 2025 11:56:21 +0000 /?p=4068565 The Trump administration is cutting $160 million in healthcare funding to the Washington Department of Health, with the Health Care Authority losing an additional $34 million in funding from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

With this funding going away, state officials worry that it may make it harder for people to get proper treatment, but the “Gee and Ursula Show” on Xվ Newsradio wonders if the state’s even be able to provide reasonable care to begin with.

“We are woefully inadequate when it comes to services provided to people,” co-host Ursula Reutin said. “Who can provide those services, what’s available?”

Gee Scott agreed, bringing up how often mental health and drug abuse have been a topic of conversation since “the war on drugs:”

“Was it really about drugs or people? Because at the end of it all, Ursula, we kept saying, where’s the help? Is it only for people who have means?” Gee Scott said.

Gee adds that “we can all agree we need more” help, and that right now might not be a time to cut funding.

‘Here’s the rub…’

The money given to state public health programs was originally in response to COVID-19 relief bills, and  reports that the Department of Health and Human Services is cutting the money, intending to “no longer waste billions of taxpayer dollars responding to a nonexistent pandemic that Americans moved on from years ago.”

“The growing national debt is a real issue, but here’s the rub,” said Ursula, “They’re talking about spending cuts, but they’re also talking about expanding the first term Trump cuts… so you’re talking about making sweeping cuts in programs that help middle and low income families to pay for permanent tax breaks that benefit corporations and high income earners, and in my opinion that is a bunch of BS.”

reports that these funding cuts could impact the work of more than 200 full-time state health department employees.

Ready for the worst? ‘Gee and Ursula’ ask if you have a right to feel ‘mad’ about storm prep /kiro-opinion/overprepared-for-the-storm/4068534 Thu, 27 Mar 2025 18:34:36 +0000 /?p=4068534 Wednesday night’s forecast promised the potential of large hail, damaging winds, and even isolated tornadoes, leading to some Seattle public schools and government offices canceling activities and closing up early out of an abundance of caution.

But when a tornado and “big balls of hail… never materialized,” Ursula Reutin of “The Gee and Ursula Show” on Xվ Newsradio wondered if people have a right to feel “mad” that they prepared for the worst, just for it not to happen.

Gee Scott quickly responded, saying he’d rather always be prepared, “You know what, everybody? I’m done doubting. If it can happen, it’s a possibility.”

‘I would rather err on the side of caution’

As the storm was arriving on Wednesday night, Gee was on a flight back to Seattle and felt like his arrival time took longer than normal.

“What I think they did (the pilots) … around Idaho and Montana… they did a couple U-Turns… and were hanging out.”

The National Weather Service’s (NWS) Storm Prediction Center issued a severe thunderstorm watch along the Interstate 5 (I-5) corridor on Wednesday evening. According to , the NWS is estimating that around 1,1142 lightning strikes hit Washington and a part of Oregon between 7 a.m. Wednesday to 7 a.m. Thursday.

‘Arrogance and incompetence’: Retired four-star general blasts Trump admin. over leaked texts /gee-and-ursula/general-leaked-texts/4067781 Wed, 26 Mar 2025 22:30:15 +0000 /?p=4067781 Senior Cabinet officials — including the Vice President, Secretary of Defense, Director of National Intelligence, and the National Security Advisor — were discussing sensitive attack plans in Yemen on the messaging app Signal when ٱԳپ’s editor-in-chief was accidentally added to the group chat.

Retired four-star general Barry McCaffrey called the slip-up “breathtaking incompetence” on “The Gee and Ursula Show” on Xվ Newsradio Tuesday.

“It’s an element of arrogance,” he added “I think, by the way, the big thing about this story isn’t that they were so clumsy and uncoordinated that they put up a first-class editor-in-chief of Atlantic magazine under a chat group. The big problem is, they were using a commercially encrypted system to discuss pending war plans. I would be astonished if many foreign intelligence services haven’t been targeting this administration since they were sworn in, that they undoubtedly have hacked this commercial grade encryption, and so they’ve been listening to their conversations the whole time.”

Former general says leaked texts put lives at risk

McCaffrey said the officials didn’t want to be held prisoner to the official records act, so they used a private chat room. He believes their decision put lives at risk.

“They’re putting the lives of US navy and air force pilots at risk,” he said. “They were putting at risk the targeting information. The people they were after would be potentially capable of fleeing the strike scene. So it’s arrogance and incompetence of just unbelievable proportions.”

Co-host of “Gee and Ursula,” Ursula Reutin, mentioned that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth . Then, during a hearing Tuesday morning, Tulsi Gabbard, the Director of National Intelligence, and John Ratcliffe, the CIA Director, both .

“It strikes me as a bunch of fifth-grade boys,” McCaffrey responded. “I mean, the lying is comical. It’s pathetic.”

Ursula said that normally, the incident would be investigated.

To which McCaffrey replied, “Well, it’s not going to happen.”

Ursula Reutin: Trump administration’s approach to dismantling Education Department is ‘harmful’ /kiro-opinion/ursula-reutin-trump-administrations-approach-to-dismantling-education-department-is-harmful/4067633 Wed, 26 Mar 2025 12:00:36 +0000 /?p=4067633 Washington Attorney General Nick Brown is one of 21 state attorneys as part of a lawsuit to stop President Donald Trump’s attempt to dismantle the Department of Education.

The coalition originally filed the lawsuit on March 13, but after Trump made an announcement on March 21 — that the department must “immediately” transfer student loan management and special education services outside of the department — the coalition is now seeking a court order to immediately stop the mass layoffs and transfer of services.

Co-host of “The Gee and Ursula Show” on Xվ Newsradio, Ursula Reutin, believes the Trump administration shouldn’t get rid of the entire education department. She added that the decision could have been made more considerately.

“I think that some of this would go down a whole lot better with more people, on the party that is not in office, if it was both messaged and done in a way that sounded much more judicious and sounded much more like, ‘Hey, we’re going to do this in a thoughtful manner. This is the reason. This is why we’re doing this. We’re not just sending people in and just doing a massive layoff because this is something that we promised. It’s in Project 2025, etc,'” she said.

Can state agencies take over for Education Department?

Ursula referenced that reports a family is suing the Bellingham School District after it allegedly failed to protect their daughter from repeated sexual harassment and did not follow state laws when the incidents were reported.

To which she asked fill-in co-host Greg Tomlin, “A federal coordinator is investigating the district. You’re saying that you think that same thing could be done through the Justice Department?”

He responded that the situation could be handled under existing governmental departments, calling the Department of Education “a massive bureaucracy.”

“I’m not saying that there couldn’t be improvement,” Ursula replied. “I think just the way they’re going about it is not palatable. I think it’s harmful.”

Gee Scott: This Oregon bill will lead to fewer egg and sperm donors /kiro-opinion/trace-donor-parents/4066016 Sun, 23 Mar 2025 12:00:00 +0000 /?p=4066016 A bill in Oregon could end the anonymity of egg and sperm donors by allowing donor-conceived individuals to discover their biological parents later in life. While there are some concerns around privacy, Ursula Reutin of “The Gee and Ursula Show” on Xվ Newsradio says we have the right to know who our parents are. Gee Scott, however, is not so sure.

Oregon lawmakers are considering Senate Bill 163. It would allow children conceived through sperm, egg, or embryo donations to access donor identities once they turn 18. The bill requires fertility clinics to collect donor information, which would then be stored in a state registry.

Colorado has passed a similar law, though it has faced pushback. Laws on donor identity vary across the U.S., with some states encouraging, but not requiring disclosure.

Gee believes that a bill like this will “mean less people will donate.” Ursula understands the complexity of the issue, but says it comes down to someone’s practical right to know.

Gee Scott: Killing the Department of Education will return segregation to schools /kiro-opinion/gee-department-of-education/4066030 Sat, 22 Mar 2025 12:04:13 +0000 /?p=4066030 President Trump has signed an executive order directing U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon to dismantle the Department of Education while bypassing Congress. Trump’s administration has previously criticized the department’s budget and stagnant student test scores.

He said that programs like Title I for low-income schools and special education funding will remain unaffected. However, Democrats warned the move could harm low-income families and students, while some Republicans support redirecting funds back to the states.

Gee warns of school segregation

During a recent episode of “The Gee and Ursula Show,” co-host Gee Scott shared his thoughts on the closure and why he believes it could return segregation to schools.

“By the way, the state of Washington has more finances than Mississippi or Alabama. When the states are trying to figure out how to make do, they will go back to segregation of schools in these states because there’s gonna be people that voted for this administration,” Gee said.

Ursula, co-host of “Gee and Ursula,” responded to Gee, partially agreeing but also highlighting that the more rural the school district, the less money they will likely have.

“Some districts will fare OK if that goes away, but the more rural the school districts, those are the ones that are going to be impacted the most,” Ursula said.

‘That makes zero sense’: Ursula pans plan to garnish child support payments of low-income families /kiro-opinion/taxing-the-poor/4065416 Thu, 20 Mar 2025 16:40:42 +0000 /?p=4065416 With Washington state facing a $13 billion deficit, Governor Bob Ferguson wants to garnish child support payments of low income families as a way to help balance the budget. The idea didn’t go over so well on “The Gee and Ursula Show” on Xվ Newsradio.

Under federal law, if your family is on public assistance, the state can garnish child support payments to reimburse the government for that money. It’s been the practice in Washington state for decades. But a bipartisan bill aims to end this practice by 2026, with proponents of the bill arguing this is all just a tax on low income families.

The pushback

State Rep. Travis Couture (R-Allyn) sponsored the bill. He recently criticized the governor’s plan to keep garnishing child support payments of low income families.

“Raising taxes on poor families is the wrong way to balance the budget,” Couture said. “We should be looking at other areas to cut.”

Co-host Gee Scott noted that Ferguson is against a wealth tax, but in favor of going after low income households? “That makes zero sense to me,” co-host Ursula Reutin responded.

“We gave big kudos to Governor Ferguson for not immediately going to taxes [to address the budget deficit], but I didn’t know that that would now include hitting and hurting some of the most vulnerable people in our state,” Ursula continued.

Gee and Ursula: This makes little sense.

Ursula added, “This hurts a lot of single, low-income women. The reality is, this practice disincentivizes men from making their child support payments because they know their kids aren’t getting the money anyway.”

Gee slammed the practice as “not a good look,” with Ursula noting that garnishing child support payments has a long history but many states are moving away from this practice. Why isn’t Washington one of them?

Gee Scott: ‘This is a black mark’ on Gov. Inslee’s clemency program /gee-and-ursula/gee-scott-inslees-clemency/4063929 Tue, 18 Mar 2025 11:42:30 +0000 /?p=4063929 A 54-year-old Everett man who was granted clemency by Governor Jay Inslee in 2019 is back behind bars, accused of possessing enough drugs to kill hundreds of thousands of people potentially.

“He’s doing illegal stuff. Throw him in jail,” Gee Scott, co-host of “The Gee and Ursula Show” on Xվ Newsradio, declared bluntly regarding the allegations.

Percy Levy was arrested last week following a traffic stop in Snohomish County. A subsequent search of his home, conducted under a warrant, revealed large quantities of cocaine, fentanyl, illegal firearms, and a scale. He now faces 11 felony charges, each carrying a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

This arrest will lead to questions over restorative justice programs

Since clemency, Levy has been working in restorative justice, programs focused on rehabilitating offenders over more-harsh prison sentences. Gee noted that stories like this give people the reason to be “skeptical when it comes to restorative justice. This is a black mark on exactly what they are doing.”

He currently works as a community outreach specialist for the is also the founder of Redemption Auto, an automobile dealership in Everett. The dealership’s website describes Levy as a symbol of personal redemption, with a mission to transform lives. Additionally, Levy serves as the treasurer for the board of the Black Lives Matter, Seattle-King County Chapter.

What does this say about clemency?

Co-host Ursula Reutin added a broader perspective, questioning the overall effectiveness of clemency and pardoning powers.

“How many of these stories have we heard since the Blake decision? This is the only one that sticks out to me,” she said.

Ursula emphasized the need to consider the re-arrest rate for people who have received clemency compared to those released from jail, suggesting that the numbers might be lower for the former group.

Levy’s legal troubles date back to 2002 when he was arrested for a drug-related robbery. He spent 17 years in prison before being granted clemency.
