Drinking a lot of coffee might limit the chances that your prostate cancer will return.

Seattle researchers found that men who drink at least four cups of coffee a day have a significantly reduced chance that their prostate cancer will return.

“Almost a 60 percent (59 percent) reduction in their risk of having prostate cancer come back or recur in men who had previously been diagnosed and treated for the disease,” said Janet Stanford, Ph.D, at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

The findings are reported online at

Stanford speculated that beneficial chemicals and acids in coffee might play a role in cancer progression.

Researchers followed 630 patients diagnosed with prostate cancer between 2002 and 2005 in King County. Stanford said the findings call for a larger study in hopes of replicating the findings.

It’s the second study of its size and type to show that prostate cancer patients might benefit from drinking more than just an occasional cup of coffee.
