Washington ferry cancellations go ‘beyond COVID’: Report highlights systemic staffing issues

The state ferry system says the crew shortage is making it impossible to staff the boats.

People who need to get between islands can catch one of the ferries that runs from Anacortes and stops at multiple San Juan docks.

Interisland service on the San Juan Islands route will be suspended later this evening and remain out of service through the end of the day tomorrow due to a lack of crew. The Tillikum will tie up at 4:55 p.m. today, taking it out of service this evening and all day Friday, April 8. The boat’s last sailing will be its 4:15 p.m. departure from Orcas to Friday Harbor.

Customers still needing to travel between islands will need to use one of the other three remaining boats to get to their destination. Interisland service will resume on Sunday, April 10, which is the first day of the Spring schedule and the start of weekend interisland service.

Thank you for your understanding while we work to maintain our fleet. We will continue to provide updates as soon as they become available, a WSDOT statement reads.
