Marysville cop whose child was shot tries to get job back

Jul 23, 2013, 12:37 PM | Updated: 1:11 pm

A former Marysville police officer, fired for negligence, is trying to get his job back.

The Marysville Police Officers Association, the union representing Marysville officers, has filed a grievance on behalf of Derek Carlile. He left his gun in the family van and his 3-year-old son shot and killed his 7-year-old daughter in March 2012. reports an arbitration hearing to consider the firing is set for October.

The city administrator in Marysville said the grievance process is part of the city’s labor contract with the police officer’s union and that the city will abide by the arbitrator’s ruling.

Carlile’s manslaughter trial ended with a hung jury and the Snohomish County prosecutor dropped the case.
