Two people dead after multiple firefighters reportedly shot in Northern Idaho

Police say two people have been killed, during an active shooter incident near Canfield Mountain, Idaho, where multiple firefighters were reportedly shot while battling a brush fire,
The Kootenai County Sheriff鈥檚 Office confirmed that the active shooter situation unfolded in the area of East Nettleton Gulch Road, where fire crews had responded to a vegetation fire.
Law enforcement has not released details about the number of firefighters injured or their conditions.
Northern Lakes Fire Protection District Chief Pat Riley said the firefighters were shot while working the fire, prompting crews to retreat.
He confirmed that fire suppression efforts have been halted due to the ongoing danger.
鈥淢y immediate reaction was completely heartbroken,鈥 Riley said. 鈥淲e trained for this. You never want to see it in your own community.鈥
Despite the active threat, Riley said firefighters are remaining focused.
He also noted that, at this time, evacuations are not expected.
However, residents in the area are urged to remain aware of their surroundings and to follow any instructions from law enforcement as the situation continues to develop.
Chief Riley also said law enforcement agencies from multiple jurisdictions have responded to assist with the incident.
Deputies have asked the public to avoid East Nettleton Gulch Road and the surrounding area near Canfield Mountain while the scene remains active.
The Sheriff鈥檚 Office has not said whether any suspect has been identified or apprehended.
