Humberto Lopez Rodriguez, 31, formerly of Renton, had been sentenced to five years in prison for drug trafficking but failed to report to the Federal Correctional Institution in Lompoc, California.

In December 2023, while attempting to travel from California to Washington, Lopez Rodriguez was arrested with a loaded firearm and a large quantity of cocaine in his vehicle.

“This defendant continued to deal drugs while on pretrial release and later was arrested in a car with a drug load when he should have been serving his federal sentence,” Acting U.S. Attorney Miller stated in the release. “Such conduct, ignoring our laws and criminal justice system, appropriately results in additional prison time.”

Fugitive trafficker caught with cocaine, sentenced in cartel probe

The arrest was part of a broader investigation targeting a drug trafficking network with connections to Mexico and Colombia. The operation spanned several months and involved multiple law enforcement agencies. By June 2024, the investigation had led to 24 search and arrest warrants. At that point, Lopez Rodriguez was already in custody following his arrest in December.

Law enforcement seized narcotics and weapons during the investigation, including 84,000 fentanyl pills, over one kilogram of fentanyl powder, 32 kilograms of cocaine, 15 kilograms of methamphetamine, and nearly three kilograms of heroin. In addition to the drugs, agents recovered 18 firearms and approximately $71,000 in suspected drug proceeds.

Five of the sixteen individuals charged in the case have already pleaded guilty. Among them is Ramon Duarte Garcia, 38, a Mexican citizen living in Kent, who was sentenced in May 2025 to 10 years in prison.

A judge sentenced Curtis McDaniel, 56, a U.S. citizen from Tukwila, to five years in prison. Jose Luis Villafañe Osorio, 36, a Colombian citizen living in Plainfield, New Jersey, pleaded guilty and will face sentencing on August 13, 2025. Manuel Garcia Hernandez, 39, a Mexican citizen from Renton, is scheduled to be sentenced on September 9, 2025.

This investigation is part of , a federal initiative aimed at dismantling cartels, combating illegal immigration tied to organized crime, and reducing violent crime across the country.

Certain cans in the Celsius Beach Variety Pack may contain alcoholic seltzer but are mistakenly labeled as Celsius Astro Vibe Sparkling Blue Razz energy drink, according to .

The affected cans feature a silver top and carry Celsius branding despite being filled with High Noon’s vodka seltzer.

The mistake happened when a packaging supplier accidentally sent empty Celsius energy drink cans to High Noon, NCB News reported. As a result, some High Noon vodka seltzers were filled into those mislabeled cans.

The affected products were shipped to stores between July 21 and July 23 in six states: Florida, New York, Ohio, South Carolina, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

High Noon has not disclosed the exact number of cans that were affected, but is urging retailers and customers to return the mislabeled items for a refund and proper disposal.

Washington joins 21-state SNAP data lawsuit against USDA /mynorthwest-politics/wa-joins-snap-lawsuit/4115577 Wed, 30 Jul 2025 19:54:12 +0000 /?p=4115577 Washington Attorney General Nick Brown has joined 20 other states in filing a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), challenging a federal directive that requires states to submit sensitive data on millions of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court, claims the USDA’s request for detailed personal information, such as Social Security numbers and home addresses, violates federal privacy laws and exceeds the agency’s legal authority, according to a from the Washington State Office of the Attorney General.

The dispute centers around a new USDA rule introduced in May. It requires states to provide five years of personal data on everyone who applies for or receives SNAP benefits. In Washington state, this would impact over 1.2 million people.

WA sues USDA over SNAP data rule, citing privacy violations

SNAP is funded by the federal government but managed by individual states. For over 60 years, this partnership has operated under clear boundaries regarding data sharing and eligibility verification.

The USDA has threatened to withhold administrative funding from states that refuse to comply, putting their ability to run the SNAP program at risk, according to Brown. The 21-state coalition, including California, New York, and Arizona, argues that the policy was enacted without proper public notice or a chance for comment, violating the Administrative Procedure Act.

The USDA has not yet issued a public response to the lawsuit.

2 lawsuits filed against WA hospitals over sexual misconduct by physician /local/wa-hospital-sexual-abuse-lawsuit/4115551 Wed, 30 Jul 2025 17:18:08 +0000 /?p=4115551 Two lawsuits have been filed against Providence Health and Services and Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland on July 29, Pfau Cochran Veretis Amala (PCVA) .

The medical institutions are accused of failing to protect patients from alleged sexual abuse by former Dr. Mark Mulholland. In one instance, a patient was left bleeding for days following a gynecological exam.

Lawsuits allege WA hospitals ignored sexual misconduct from a physician

The lawsuits are in response to a report by the Washington State Medical Commission. The report outlines four separate complaints of sexual misconduct by Dr. Mulholland spanning from 2022 to 2024.

In addition to the lawsuits, two new formal complaints have been submitted to the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) by individuals who say they were also abused.

According to court documents, staff allegedly received multiple warnings over several years regarding Dr. Mulholland’s behavior, but failed to respond appropriately.

One lawsuit cites a 2017 incident where a patient reported that Dr. Mulholland allegedly conducted a vaginal exam without wearing gloves, physically restrained her during the exam, and made inappropriate contact.

Another account from June 2023 alleges a patient was left in pain and bleeding for days following an invasive exam, during which Dr. Mulholland also allegedly made sexually inappropriate comments.

Plaintiffs argue that the medical centers “dismissed” numerous staff and patient concerns. The Washington State Medical Commission’s findings align with the survivors’ claims, stating that the patient and employee concerns were not adequately addressed.

“Despite receiving multiple complaints about Dr. Mulholland sexually abusing his patients, these institutions failed to take action and allowed his abuse to continue,” said Mallory Allen, the victim’s attorney and partner at PCVA. “Unfortunately, this is part of a pattern we’ve seen time and again – people in positions of immense trust and power abusing others at their most vulnerable, while the institutions sworn to protect them fail to act.”

The lawsuits seek damages for the survivors and aim to hold the institutions accountable for what attorneys describe as systemic failures in patient protection and oversight.

Neither Providence Health & Services nor Kadlec Regional Medical Center has issued a public response to the new legal actions as of this reporting.

Seattle starter home sales rise as other markets slow, new report shows /local/home-market-rates-cool/4115262 Wed, 30 Jul 2025 12:01:37 +0000 /?p=4115262 The market for starter homes is heating up in Seattle with sales rising nearly 4% over June, according to a new .

Experts attribute the growth in starter home purchases to a wave of first-time buyers taking advantage of improved market conditions. June marked the 10th straight month of year-over-year sales gains for starter homes, with pending sales also up 3.1%, a sign that the upward trend could continue in the near term.

While entry-level homes are drawing more buyers, sales of mid-tier and high-priced properties are losing momentum. Sales of mid-priced homes slipped 0.9% compared to the same time last year, and high-end homes saw a sharper decline of 3.6%.

Starter home sales climb as pricier market segments cool

The national median sale price for a starter home now sits at $260,000. However, prices remain far higher in major metros like Seattle, where affordable entry points are increasingly rare. Starter homes in Seattle typically sell within just nine days, highlighting intense demand and limited supply.

The data suggests that while affordability challenges persist, especially in coastal cities, entry-level properties remain a focal point for active buyers, perhaps the most resilient segment of a cooling housing market.

Auburn man sentenced to prison for garage fentanyl lab, guns /crime_blotter/auburn-garage-fentanyl/4115187 Wed, 30 Jul 2025 00:15:41 +0000 /?p=4115187 A 59-year-old man from Auburn was sentenced to 11 years in federal prison on Tuesday for making and selling fentanyl pills.

Johnny Elias was first arrested in 2024 after a lengthy investigation that revealed he was deeply involved in drug trafficking, according to a from Acting U.S. Attorney Teal Luthy Miller.

Investigators said they began watching Elias in late 2023. Court evidence showed he had created the shell company Bodacious Vitamins LLC and used it as a front for the drugs. With profits from drug sales, Elias spent over $16,000 on an industrial-grade pill press. When federal agents searched his Auburn home in November 2024, they discovered his garage had been turned into a drug lab.

Auburn man sentenced for garage drug lab

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) seized hundreds of pills laced with both fentanyl and heroin, four kilograms of blue fentanyl powder, Narcan, and various packaging materials. DEA agents also found several firearms.

“The deadly nature of the four kilograms of fentanyl powder that Mr. Elias was manufacturing into pills is easy to count:  It could have yielded over 300,000 lethal doses,” David F. Reames, Special Agent in Charge, DEA Seattle Field Division, stated in the release. “Mr. Elias clearly knew the dangers of his scheme and took steps to protect himself from overdose and violence; callously disregarding these dangers, he foisted on others.”

Elias originally pleaded guilty in March 2025 to multiple charges, including illegal possession of firearms, possession of a controlled substance with intent to manufacture and distribute, and money laundering.

Elias will serve 11 years in federal prison, followed by a period of supervised release.

Man charged in fatal $8 robbery, stabbing at Marysville church /crime_blotter/marysville-stabbing-church/4115146 Tue, 29 Jul 2025 23:01:57 +0000 /?p=4115146

Snohomish County has charged Andrew Prescott Elliott with first- and second-degree murder in connection with the March 31 stabbing of 66-year-old Gheorghe Sandru near Northwest Baptist Church in Marysville.

Investigators identified Elliott as a suspect based on surveillance footage, forensic evidence, and interviews with witnesses, according to .

The same case is also tied to an earlier arrest of 27-year-old Keith Michael Stuard, who allegedly stabbed Sandru during a robbery attempt just after 6 a.m. Police said that Elliott dropped off Stuard and his sister at the Tulalip Resort Casino that morning in a maroon Honda.

Elliott accused of orchestrating robbery in Marysville

Further investigation, including statements from Stuard’s sister, led to Elliott’s arrest in July. She told detectives that Elliott orchestrated the robbery, provided Stuard with the knife, and promised a cut of the stolen money.

Elliott allegedly believed Sandru was carrying a large sum of cash. In reality, Sandru had only $8, which Elliott kept.

Surveillance video from several businesses later showed the group walking from Tulalip to Marysville, eventually meeting up again with Elliott near a McDonald’s and heading to Don’s Restaurant.

Confrontation and fatal stabbing

Law enforcement believes he dropped Stuard off around 90 feet from where Sandru’s body was found. Security footage reportedly shows Stuard confronting Sandru with something that looks like a knife and demanding his wallet. When Sandru tried to run, he was stabbed to death in the chest.

Later that same day, detectives located Elliott and his Honda in Everett. According to police, Elliott waived his Miranda rights during questioning and initially blamed a man named Tim for the stabbing. However, he described clothing that matched what Stuard was seen wearing in the surveillance footage.

Elliott was then released while investigators gathered more evidence. A search of his vehicle uncovered a 12-inch knife with a sheath wrapped in black tape on the floor, where Stuard had reportedly been seated.

DNA testing by the Washington State Patrol crime lab revealed Sandru’s blood on the blade and Elliott’s fingerprints on the sheath. Stuard’s DNA was also found on Sandru’s hand and wrist.

Stuard was arrested on July 2. During an interview with detectives, he first claimed memory loss but later admitted to meeting with Elliott that morning for a robbery. After being shown photos, Stuard identified Elliott.

Deputy staffing restored in King County precincts following budget boost /local/king-county-staffing-sheriff/4114768 Tue, 29 Jul 2025 12:03:53 +0000 /?p=4114768 The King County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday that deputy staffing levels have returned to normal in the North and Southeast precincts following months of reduced coverage.

The cuts began in March, following staffing reductions caused by unexpected overtime costs. The reduced coverage placed significant strain on emergency response services, particularly in rural and suburban areas.

King County Council approves $845K in supplemental funding

The renewed staffing levels follow the King County Council’s approval of $845,000 in supplemental funding to reverse the cuts. The funding, proposed by King County Council members Sarah Perry and Reagan Dunn, was included in a mid-year budget adjustment passed earlier this month.

“Today’s restoration of staffing levels is a victory for public safety and for unincorporated King County,” Dunn said. “The safety of residents in these communities should never be neglected to pay the price for budgeting decisions beyond their control.”

The funding not only restores daily staffing but also supports longer-term planning. As part of the same initiative, the council is launching an effort to review the sheriff’s office staffing model to ensure it meets the evolving needs of communities outside incorporated cities.

74-year-old Seattle RV driver allegedly kills pedestrian after drinking 6 beers /crime_blotter/74-year-old-seattle-rv-driver/4114740 Mon, 28 Jul 2025 19:21:28 +0000 /?p=4114740

A 74-year-old Seattle man allegedly killed a pedestrian in a multi-vehicle crash on Thursday after admitting to drinking six 16-ounce beers the same night.

The man allegedly drove his motor home into multiple vehicles in Skyway on the night of July 24, according to the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

While traveling down 68th Avenue South, he allegedly veered onto the shoulder, collided with a Chevrolet Silverado, and pushed it into a driveway, where it fatally struck a pedestrian named Susana Garcia-Perez.

The Silverado then hit a parked Jeep before the man allegedly reversed the motorhome and continued down the street, hitting at least two more vehicles before fleeing the scene.

Seattle man arrested after fatal multi-vehicle crash

Detectives said surveillance video and witness statements helped identify the driver. His wife told deputies she believed her husband was involved and likely intoxicated. She added that he had recently purchased the RV days earlier.

One day later, on July 25, police found the RV near a truck stop in North Bend and arrested Hayes. Police said the man admitted to drinking six 16-ounce beers before the fatal crash and claimed he didn’t remember the collision. The man told officers that he was unaware anyone had died; when he was informed, he reportedly broke down in tears.

Driver could face felony charges for death of pedestrian

The man appeared in court Saturday afternoon for a first appearance hearing. While probable cause was established, prosecutors emphasized that a felony charging decision requires a higher burden of proof. He is being held on $250,000 bail.

Witnesses said they saw the man shortly before the crash at a nearby Grocery Outlet, where he fell inside his RV and asked an employee for help. That employee, identified as Cedric, said the man requested more beer and then moved the RV across the street. Security camera footage confirmed this timeline, according to officials.

Distinctive blue and purple fiberglass debris discovered at multiple crash sites matched damage on the RV. The man remains in custody as prosecutors prepare to review the case for potential charges. The King County Sheriff’s Office is expected to submit the formal case referral by Wednesday.

New Washington law protects bystanders who break into hot cars to save lives /local/washington-law-break-into-hot-cars/4114729 Mon, 28 Jul 2025 19:00:11 +0000 /?p=4114729 A new law in Washington now protects individuals from civil liability if they break into a vehicle to rescue someone in danger.

Starting Monday, allows people to break car windows if there is no other way for the vulnerable person or animal inside to escape.

New WA law shields bystanders breaking into hot cars

There are exceptions to the new law. People must first call 911 before entering the vehicle and are required to remain at the scene until law enforcement or first responders arrive.

The law extends beyond children and pets. It also includes vulnerable adults who may be impaired due to age, brain injury, developmental, or emotional conditions.

The legislation comes amid growing concern over heat-related vehicle deaths. According to , more than 1,000 children nationwide have died of heatstroke in cars since 1998, including 15 fatalities so far this year.

The most recent case in Washington occurred on May 24, 2023, when a one-year-old child died in Puyallup after being left in a vehicle on a 77-degree day.

Subcontractors sue over unpaid work at Microsoft’s $5B Redmond campus /local/microsoft-redmond-contractors-lawsuit/4114704 Mon, 28 Jul 2025 17:46:09 +0000 /?p=4114704 Two subcontractors involved in Microsoft’s five billion dollar Redmond campus expansion are now suing, according to the .

Facade specialist and concrete contractor filed separate lawsuits against the joint venture. The two companies are claiming unpaid work and additional uncompensated costs in the lawsuits.

Subcontractors sue, claiming unpaid work for Microsoft’s Redmond campus

Microsoft, which hired the joint venture as general contractor, is not named in either lawsuit. The campus project remains delayed with no current completion date.

Announced in 2017, the redevelopment project is the Puget Sound region’s largest and most expensive construction effort to date, though it is currently facing delays. Microsoft hired Skanska Balfour Beatty as the general contractor to oversee the work.

Roschmann began work in 2020, but allegedly faced delays caused by the war in Ukraine and COVID-19. After informing the joint venture, Roschmann insisted it was not properly compensated.

The company claimed it suffered $10 million in extra costs before being removed from the project in late 2024. Skanska-Balfour Beatty denies the claims and has since countersued, arguing Roschmann failed to meet contractual obligations.

Sumner-based company SAK Builders claims it is owed $2.19 million for work completed between March 2022 and June 2024. The company is also seeking payment from the project’s bonding insurers.
