Suspect dead, at least 2 shot at Manhattan office building housing financial firms and NFL /national/new-york-city-shooting/4114845 Mon, 28 Jul 2025 23:55:35 +0000 /national/new-york-city-authorities-respond-to-report-of-shooting-at-midtown-building-that-houses-nfl/4114845 At least two people, including a New York City police officer, were shot Monday in a midtown office building that houses some of the country’s top financial firms and the  a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press.

The person, who did not immediately know the victims’ conditions, was not authorized to publicly discuss the ongoing investigation and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.

The gunman is dead, and authorities believe he fatally shot himself, according to two people familiar with the investigation who were not authorized to publicly discuss the matter.

The Fire Department of New York said emergency crews were called to the Park Avenue office building Monday evening for a report of someone shot. A spokesperson said the call came in around 6:30 p.m. but provided no other details.

Mayor Eric Adams said multiple people were injured. He posted a clip to social media urging people still inside the office building to stay put because police officers were conducting a floor-by-floor search. The Democrat said he’s headed to the hospital to speak with the family and loved ones of those involved.

Local TV footage showed lines of people evacuating the office building with their hands above their heads. The building includes offices of Blackstone and the consulate general of Ireland.

Some finance workers at an office building down the block were picking up dinner at a corner eatery when they heard a loud noise and saw people running.

“It was like a crowd panic,” said Anna Smith, who joined the workers pouring back into the finance office building. They remained there for about two hours before being told they could leave.

The building where the shooting happened is in a busy area of midtown, located a short walk north from Grand Central Terminal and about a block east of St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

The city’s emergency management alert system warned of traffic delays, road closures and disruptions to public transportation in the area.

74-year-old Seattle RV driver allegedly kills pedestrian after drinking 6 beers /crime_blotter/74-year-old-seattle-rv-driver/4114740 Mon, 28 Jul 2025 19:21:28 +0000 /?p=4114740

A 74-year-old Seattle man allegedly killed a pedestrian in a multi-vehicle crash on Thursday after admitting to drinking six 16-ounce beers the same night.

The man allegedly drove his motor home into multiple vehicles in Skyway on the night of July 24, according to the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

While traveling down 68th Avenue South, he allegedly veered onto the shoulder, collided with a Chevrolet Silverado, and pushed it into a driveway, where it fatally struck a pedestrian named Susana Garcia-Perez.

The Silverado then hit a parked Jeep before the man allegedly reversed the motorhome and continued down the street, hitting at least two more vehicles before fleeing the scene.

Seattle man arrested after fatal multi-vehicle crash

Detectives said surveillance video and witness statements helped identify the driver. His wife told deputies she believed her husband was involved and likely intoxicated. She added that he had recently purchased the RV days earlier.

One day later, on July 25, police found the RV near a truck stop in North Bend and arrested Hayes. Police said the man admitted to drinking six 16-ounce beers before the fatal crash and claimed he didn’t remember the collision. The man told officers that he was unaware anyone had died; when he was informed, he reportedly broke down in tears.

Driver could face felony charges for death of pedestrian

The man appeared in court Saturday afternoon for a first appearance hearing. While probable cause was established, prosecutors emphasized that a felony charging decision requires a higher burden of proof. He is being held on $250,000 bail.

Witnesses said they saw the man shortly before the crash at a nearby Grocery Outlet, where he fell inside his RV and asked an employee for help. That employee, identified as Cedric, said the man requested more beer and then moved the RV across the street. Security camera footage confirmed this timeline, according to officials.

Distinctive blue and purple fiberglass debris discovered at multiple crash sites matched damage on the RV. The man remains in custody as prosecutors prepare to review the case for potential charges. The King County Sheriff’s Office is expected to submit the formal case referral by Wednesday.

Drug deal leads to armed robbery and kidnapping in Thurston County

The victim was beaten and dumped on the side of the road after the kidnapping.

TCSO detailed the suspect’s vehicle as a black Yukon with stickers on the back. Approximately one hour later, TCSO Sheriff Sanders identified a black Yukon matching the description that was driving in Lacey.

Sanders conducted a traffic stop after the vehicle failed to use a turn signal.

The two people inside the vehicle matched the description of the robbery suspects. TCSO brought the victim to the scene and positively identified that both of the suspects were involved in the robbery and kidnapping.

Sheriff Sanders noted that a handgun was found attached to the driver’s side door, out of Sander’s view during the traffic stop.

TCSO revealed that the robbery occurred in Olympia, and the two suspects are in custody. The suspect’s vehicle will be impounded for a search warrant.

Booking restrictions active for Thurston County jail after facility reaches max capacity /local/thurston-county-jail-max-capacity/4113929 Sat, 26 Jul 2025 13:01:55 +0000 /?p=4113929 The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office has booking restrictions in place for the county jail after the sheriff, Derek Sanders, claimed the detention facility is running out of space for women, specifically those who are being housed there for violent crimes and undergoing mental health crises.

According to the sheriff’s office, the corrections deputies have utilized every available inhabitable space in the jail to house these inmates, including the transfer unit and the video court area — neither of which were designed to be permanent living spaces.

“The space issues that have been present for the past decade continue to strain resources at the jail,” Sanders said. “Failing to enact these restrictions would place the county in a high liability scenario, with risk of harm being placed on both staff and inmates alike.”

Probable cause arrests are not impacted at this time.

What does this mean for Thurston County?

The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office stated it will continue to enter the warrants when those suspected of crimes fall out of compliance and a warrant is issued. However, if the warrant is not on their list of confirmable offenses, the warrant will be ignored and not confirmed.

Confirmable warrants include domestic violence assault, domestic violence order violation, and violent felonies.

Warrants that do not meet this threshold will not be accepted. Those crimes include second-degree burglary, auto theft, property damage, felony harassment, threats to kill, hit and run with injury, second-degree arson, fraud, impersonation, theft, and drug dealing.

“When conditions improve, the restrictions will be lifted. If conditions deteriorate, restrictions will be applied to probable cause arrests as well,” Sanders said. “The county continues to assess short and long-term solutions for space shortages pertaining to our violent/mentally ill population.”

Seattle man caught with fentanyl and gun on way to DOC meeting convicted /crime_blotter/seattle-fentanyl-convicted/4113964 Sat, 26 Jul 2025 12:01:09 +0000 /?p=4113964 A Seattle man was convicted in U.S. District Court Thursday for possession of fentanyl with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm, the U.S. Department of Justice Friday.

Anthony Raymond Dodd, 36, had prior convictions for robbery, burglary, and sexually assaulting a homeowner during a residential burglary.

Seattle man guilty of possessing fentanyl and illegal firearm

Dodd was convicted following a three-day trial. The jury deliberated for approximately six hours before returning a guilty verdict to the judge. In a second proceeding, Dodd was convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Dodd was scheduled to meet with his community corrections officer on February 22, 2024, according to records filed in the case and trial testimonies.

Law enforcement received a report that Dodd was in possession of a firearm and selling fentanyl pills. Additional corrections officers followed Dodd on his way to meet with his assigned corrections officer.

While Dodd met with his corrections officer, his car was kept under surveillance. The DOJ noted that Dodd failed to truthfully answer questions about the guns and drugs during the meeting.

Corrections officers searched Dodd’s vehicle and found two bags of fentanyl pills in the center console. A loaded handgun sitting on top of the pills was also found.

DNA consistent with Dodd’s was found on the trigger and magazine of the firearm. Law enforcement searched Dodd’s apartment and found $1,460 and fentanyl pills hidden in a heating vent. A request for “blues” — a street term for fentanyl pills — was also discovered in a receiving text message on Dodd’s phone.

Dodd’s defense argued in his trial that he borrowed the car where the firearm and fentanyl pills were found. Assistant U.S. Attorney Cecilia Gregson told the jury that Dodd “was the last person in that car” in her closing arguments at the trial.

“This is a ‘cautionary tale’ about a defendant thinking he could commit crimes on the way to and from his Department of Corrections appointment,” prosecutors in the case stated.

U.S. District Judge John H. Chun scheduled a second trial to limit the jury’s knowledge of Dodd’s criminal history. The trial was for whether Dodd illegally possessed the firearm since he is a convicted felon. After jurors briefly deliberated, they returned a guilty verdict.

The DOJ releases noted possession of fentanyl with intent to distribute is punishable by a minimum of five years in prison and a maximum penalty of 40 years. Possession of a firearm in support of a drug trafficking crime is punishable by a minimum of five years in prison to run consecutively with all drug trafficking sentences. Unlawful possession of a firearm is punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

Hackers attack Microsoft SharePoint, targeting organizations like U.S nuclear security /local/hack-microsoft-sharepoint/4111469 Fri, 25 Jul 2025 12:04:00 +0000 /?p=4111469 Microsoft blamed two Chinese nation-state actors for exploiting recently discovered security flaws in SharePoint to infiltrate vulnerable organizations, like schools, state governments, and the U.S. government’s top nuclear security agency. Microsoft patched the vulnerabilities, but not before the actors, Linen Typhoon and Violet Typhoon, accessed those organizations’ private information and deployed ransomware in some cases, they said.

“These vulnerabilities affect on-premises SharePoint servers only and do not affect SharePoint Online in Microsoft 365,” Microsoft said in an update published by the Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC). “With the rapid adoption of these exploits, Microsoft assesses with high confidence that threat actors will continue to integrate them into their attacks against unpatched on-premises SharePoint systems.”

Attack on Microsoft SharePoint was ‘Zero-Day’ attack

The attacks raise serious security questions for a couple of reasons. It involved a so-called “Zero-Day” attack, meaning it came as a surprise to Microsoft — they had zero days to prepare a patch, and were forced to watch bad actors attack organizations with no way to stop them. Also, the organizations threatened are using older technology that includes servers that are connected to the internet but physically sit on-site. Typically, those organizations are forced to rely on such legacy servers because their budgets limit their ability to purchase security upgrades and a large-scale migration to cloud-based servers, and they often lack the IT support needed for both.

“We’re talking about schools impacted, hospitals, state and local government agencies,” Michael Sikorski, Chief Technology Officer and head of threat intelligence for Unit 42 at Palo Alto Networks, said. “That’s the scary part to me, it’s like it’s a helpless situation.”

Unit 42, which is a specialized team of security experts within Palo Alto Networks, has been following the SharePoint issue closely. They counted dozens of on-premises servers that had been compromised, which impacted more than 50 organizations. According to tech blog ZDNET, hackers also successfully breached the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration, however, it was unclear what information was involved.

Hackers take advantage of contest

The bad actors, which Microsoft said also included non-nation-state actors, took advantage of two vulnerabilities discovered in May during a hackathon contest. The tech giant released patches for those bugs in July, however, the hackers had already exploited those vulnerabilities, which allowed cybercriminals to install malicious code and compromise an
